HOW
IT ALL BEGAN: |
This was an accident for which I think my mother will never forgive herself.
One day my mother decided she did not want me to be scared of horses (since I
was scared of almost everything else), so she pushed me to do some pony-rides.
I was not fond of the idea, but I had no choice in the matter.
The first few lessons did not secure my interest, in fact, I was nervous on the
pony and refused to let the instructor take me off of the lead rope. Trotting
was certainly out of the question. Eventually, after several lessons, my mother
decided I was comfortable enough around the large animals, so she no longer had
any desire for me to continue the expensive hobby. Still, gymnastics, skating
and violin had not yet been explored. Nevertheless, the moment she determined
I had had enough, ironically, I fell in love with the horses and riding. The
rest is history…

A TRIBUTE TO THE WONDERFUL HORSES THAT SHAPED MY CAREER: |

I began
taking my first few lessons at a small farm in Golden’s
Bridge, NY. There I learned a lot about how to care for the horses,
feeding, grooming, trailering, turn-out, etc. I rode Pollywog,
or “Polly”,
an adorable medium pony who taught me the ropes. Thanks to her, I got comfortable
enough to be freed
from a lead-line.

Yet, it was not until
age 13, that I wanted to take this sport to the next step, learn
to jump and discover the show world. At this
time I began my riding career
at Heritage Farm, under the tutelage of Andre
Dignelli, to whom I owe much of
my knowledge and success.

Wintergreen,
or “Ginny”, was
the first horse I ever rode. When I got her she was only 6 and
still very green, so it was essentially a partnership of the blind
leading
the blind. However, we learned together. We started out in the
children’s
hunters, progressed into children’s jumper and eventually
we became very competitive in the junior jumper classes.
Ginny turned
out to be a wonderful show horse winning several classes with me
at big horse shows on the circuit for the remaining two years before
she was sold to Eliza Lane. A few months after I started with Ginny
we leased Splendid Journey,
or “Tiger”, an
experienced schoolmaster who taught me all about the equitation
division.

A year
after that I leased Bob,
from Missy Clark, an amazing equitation horse with whom I had
a strong partnership and who furthered my education. At age 15,
we bought Ginger,
or “Skip”, who
was just retiring from the jumper division. He was a very special
horse, who, when I would give him a proper ride, would win. It
was not until I began riding Skip that I became a force in the
equitation
division.
At about
the same time, we purchased Indian
Summer, otherwise known as “AA”,
who was just six years old when I got him. Although I had done
jumpers with Ginny, I was still relatively green at the bigger
height. AA needed to be brought along as well, but he would become
a winner. Always in perfect form, this incredibly careful and lightning
fast horse jumped to more victories than I have ever had with any
other horse.
In
fact, within one year he received over 15 championships, 5 of which
came from
the 5 weeks he showed in Palm Beach, and others were at Devon,
Young Riders, Old Salem, Lake Placid, the Catskills, the Hampton
Classic
and indoors, in this same year he also never had a fault in the
initial round of any high junior classic! Sadly, I sold him my
last junior
year to Debbie Dolan-Sweeney.
A year
after acquiring AA, we purchased Opus.
Only five years old, Opus was
very green, yet a talented jumper prospect. For the first
year or so Opus trailed
in AA’s footsteps, but eventually he stepped up
to the plate and it was with him that I won my first
Grand-Prix and numerous other victories.
As my junior years were coming
to an end, it was evident that I would need to sell some of my horses.
AA was on high demand, as was Skip. Timing is everything, since it
was at this moment that the two best horses I will most likely ever
have the honor and privilege of riding became available. Lagretto and Sampson,
were purchased from one of my closest friends, Ellie Ritch, when
she decided to put a close to her riding career.
This was a bittersweet moment, for I had to say goodbye to my ever-faithfuls,
AA and Skip, yet there will never exist better replacements than the two horses
who would then put me on the map as a grand-prix rider.
